Munhu Receives $5,000 Thanks to Volunteer Efforts of Amgen Staff Member Martha Mutomba

Launched in 2010 by the Amgen Foundation, the Amgen Excellence in Volunteering Award recognizes staff in the U.S. and Puerto Rico who are making a difference in the communities where the company has a presence. The Amgen Foundation will award $5,000 to each nonprofit organization featured in the winning staff members’ applications.

For 2011, in Southlake, Texas, Munhu will receive the $5,000 for the volunteer contributions made by Martha Mutomba, who is an Amgen staff member in Thousand Oaks, California. Martha serves on Munhu’s board, raises funds, recruits volunteers, arranges payments for school tuition, uniforms and supplies; and also collects and ships donated clothes, blankets, toys and over-the-counter medications to villagers. She also evaluates income-generating project proposals submitted by villagers applying for loans offered through Munhu’s microloan program.

To be considered, Amgen staff were asked to complete an application with information about their volunteer services and provide a letter of recommendation from the nonprofit organization. Martha was selected by a panel of internal and external reviewers based on impact of her volunteer efforts, frequency of volunteer activity and length of time committed, and a letter of recommendation from Munhu.

We are proud to announce that 45 more students were added to Munhu’s scholarship program! All these students are from the Victoria Falls area. These new additions were made possible by the generous contributions of one of our donors.

Munhu always has a list of students waiting to be sponsored from surrounding areas; these students have either dropped out of school because of lack of tuition or are on the verge of dropping out. They are recommended to be included in Munhu’s programs by their school headmasters and Munhu’s local coordinators.

With your donation, more children will be able to study and eventually become self sufficient!
